Jen,

Gosh, you didn't mention how shocked you were that I even knew who Paris Hilton was ;)

I like to use the snowball to snowman analogy to describe the P.H. phenomena. A snowman is the by-product of a snowball that is rolled continuously, adding mass that hides its humble beginnings. Her ability to command attention creates its own ripple effect, basically - there are 65,500,000 Google results for "Paris Hilton", after all!

As for her own products, I'm not in 100% agreement with his assertions, since I suspect they at least broke even. However, to me, it goes back to authenticity and her personal brand - is she doing the right projects for her niche, and promoting them in a way that rings true to the brand she's developed? That's a mighty fine line to walk and I haven't done the research to give you an intelligent answer, just my own .02.

Now that the article explained it's her "linkage" that pushed her into mega-celebrity (apart from the rich parents), I can really see it. To me, it's what a lot of successful bloggers have been doing for a while: helping out friends, advocating for people/services they like, and sharing the spotlight. Obviously Paris is making it happen on a much larger scale, but is she doing more than my analogy lets on?

Some of the commenters picked up on something that is troubling me: why is it that she can't push her own material? Why does she only work as a billboard?
